These days it is common for hotels to offer some form of transportation in their packages. However, as crazy (and extravagant) as it sounds, there might be times where you are better off just sticking to booking your nights while looking to rent a good car for your transportation needs.
True, this could make your trips far more expensive compared to just using a hotel’s own vehicle service. And if you are just going between the hotel and one place all the time, you would be better off just opting for the package deal.

If you have got a business meeting with a really affluent client, then it might not be the best idea to have them see you coming out of a simple hotel van. You would have better luck getting a car rental service with a nice selection and being seen driving up with an impressive ride.
2. You find it better making your own way around.
Some cities are best experienced when you have more freedom to explore its streets. Public transportation and taxis can be too tied down their routes. A good car rental can make it easier to navigate your way at your own discretion.
3. You need a clean car for your health.
It might sound silly, but there are health implications when it comes to a dirty car interior. And in a time where pandemic restrictions are still not fully relaxed, a regularly disinfected vehicle remains a must. Fortunately, many car rental services are already aware of this and make sure their vehicles have high standards of cleanliness (inside and out).
4. Your ‘hotel’ is actually a homestay.
With things like Airbnb popularizing the homestay setup, it is hardly surprising that the differences between that and an actual hotel are blurring really fast (at least when you are booking on the internet). However, it is better to not rely on a homestay for transportation. It may very well be no different than getting a rental.
5. Your target destination is outside the city.
Whether it is a nature reserve or a remote beach resort, some of the best travel hotspots can take you far from the city. That means using public transportation (with all your baggage) is far from the best idea. If you need a sturdy vehicle (and even a licensed and highly experienced driver), then looking for a good car rental is a better bet!
Of course, there can still be many other situations where transportation services in hotel packages are still very useful and cost-efficient. But when you are traveling, the devil is often in the details.
Make sure you take a thorough, extensive look at how you plan on going about the city you are visiting. You never know when renting a car and driving for yourself could be the smarter choice.
